The Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) serves an ethnically and culturally diverse community through programs designed to both alleviate hardship and promote health, personal responsibility, and economic independence. DPSS Volunteers help in reaching all of these different groups in a more personalized manner. The Department provides many benefits and services to low-income residents of Los Angeles County such as: temporary financial assistance, free and low-cost health care insurance and food benefits for families. These benefits are magnified by the kind and caring service offered by DPSS Volunteers

Here are only a few examples:

• Toy Loan Centers
  Help operate a community toy library lending toys, books and games to community children or collect donations of usable toys and other items for the Toy Loan Centers.
  
  
• Clerical Support
  Assist professional and other staff on a variety of assignments.
  
  
• Adopt-A-Family
  Assist by sponsoring and providing contributions of food, toys and clothing to some of our Department's neediest individuals and families.
  
  
• Community Outreach Events
  Participate in DPSS sponsored community outreach events.
  
  
• Special Projects
  Provide help through group or individual projects based on personal skills or interest.

Volunteering brings benefits to both society at large and the individual volunteer. It makes important contributions, economically as well as socially. It contributes to a more cohesive society by building trust and reciprocity among citizens

We are pleased when a dedicated citizen such as you inquires about our volunteer program. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities to offer interested citizens of all ages, including staff and particular organizations that wish to serve the community. Our program is designed to recruit and assign volunteers to projects that enhance, strengthen and expand services to participants in departmental programs.
