In April 2001, designated General Relief districts initiated a six-month SSI Fast Track Pilot designed to expedite SSI approvals for permanently disabled General Relief participants through an enhanced medical evaluation and documentation process. In coordination with the Department of Health Services (DHS), the fast track process includes a 90-day medical evaluation period during which the participants are evaluated and treated by DHS facilities staff. On August 21, 2000, the SSI Outreach Project began at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center. This six-month pilot project is a joint effort between DPSS and the Department of Health Services (DHS). The project will provide SSI advocacy services to acutely ill, hospitalized GR participants. The pilot will use the hospital's medical evidence to better support the SSI application and thereby expedite the SSI approval process. |

Disability Redesign |

New Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
applications filed October 1, 1999 or later by GR district SSI advocates
from Metro Special, South Special, Rancho Park, Glendale, Southwest
Special and South Central districts will be processed under the Social
Security Administration's disability redesign. The redesign is designed
to expedite SSI application processing and achieve an earlier SSI
approval for qualified participants. The process eliminates the reconsideration
and introduces a pre-decision conference prior to SSI application
denial. |
