Former Foster Care Children
As you leave foster care there are some things you need to know about your health care coverage.  The Former Foster Care Children's (FFCC) Program provides full, no cost Medi-Cal for youths who were in foster care on their 18th birthday and released from foster care due to age.  Medi-Cal coverage can continue until your 21st birthday.

Under this program, you can obtain the following services at no cost:

  • regular health check-ups
  • immunizations
  • health care when you are sick
  • medical treatment if you are injured
  • regular dental check-ups
  • needed dental care
  • vision tests
  • eyeglasses
  • hospitalization when necessary
  • health exam for a new job
  • mental health services
teens

When your foster care status ends, the Department of Children and Family Services sends your information to the Department of Public Social Services and your case is assigned to an Eligibility Worker.  A letter will be mailed to you with the name and telephone number of your eligibility Worker.

Under this program, you MUST...

  • provide the Medi-Cal worker with your current address
  • reside in California in order to remain eligible
  • respond to the once-per-year contact from your Medi-Cal worker who will ask you if you still want Medi-Cal coverage.

You are not required to...

  • go to a Medi-Cal office
  • fill out application forms
  • provide documents such as your birth certificate, Social Security card, bank statements or pay stubs

Important: If you are not eligible to this program because you left foster care before your 18th birthday, you may still qualify for Medi-Cal.
