SECURITY OFFICER TRAINING

DESCRIPTION

The Security Officers training is a short-term (4-week) component available only to participants who meet the qualifying criteria to be employed in this field (see qualifying criteria below).  Participants are linked with prospective employers at the conclusion of this training and or after they secured a guard card.

 KEY POINTS

The Security Officer training is available to participants who have completed JSPC, REP or Fastrak, unless otherwise recommended by the Employment Development Team (EDT).  It includes 60 hours of industry related instruction and 15 hours of soft skills including job preparation workshops. The training consists of:

Guard Card Preparation and Testing
CPR Training
First Aid
Cultural Diversity and Tactical Communications
Tactical Communications
Legal Liability
Weapons of Mass Destruction
Chemical Agents
Criminal Law or Law of Arrest
Report Writing
Job Seeking Skills: Employment Application, Resume, Interview Skills, and tailored recruitment events.

This is a Short-Term Training and can be offered to interested participants right after completion of JSPC.

CASE MANAGER DUTIES

Pre-screen participants to ensure they meet the qualifying criteria:

  • Must be over 18 years old.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer services and problem solving skills.
  • Read, write, understand, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Have no felonies, outstanding warrants in California or out of State.
  • Have no child support unresolved issues.
  • Have no more than one misdemeanor and it will be on a case-by-case basis.
  • Provide a high school diploma, GED or obtain GED within six months.
  • Pass a physical exam.
  • Pass a drug test.

Once qualifications are determined, case managers complete a route slip to refer participants for this Short Term Training (STT).  

Case managers receive enrollment confirmation from LACOE indicating whether participant was accepted into the program.  Occasionally, participants may not be accepted after a thorough interview with LACOE during which information that disqualifies the participant might be disclosed.  In this situation, the participant would be assigned to another component by the case manager (Another STT, Vocational Assessment, etc.)

Case managers will receive request for ancillary expenses from LACOE staff. This will include $75.00 for security guard card fee and baton fee, clothing voucher if appropriate, and other supportive services if required for employment.

RESULTS
After completion of Security Officer Training and after obtaining a guard card, participants will be connected with prospective employers for a possible placement in this area. LACOE will forward verification of employment to Case Managers. If the participant is not successful in obtaining employment, the case manager will assign the participant to the next appropriate activity according to the GROW participation flow chart.

OTHER
Transportation will be provided by Case Manager.

Tentative dates for training:
Classes will be scheduled once per month.

LACOE staff will conduct an orientation for each training event and will be held the week before training starts, on Wednesdays and Fridays.
