Office Occupations

DESCRIPTION

The purpose of Office Occupations is to provide fundamental clerical skills and hands-on office training in filing, typing, 10-key machine, telephone techniques and office computer software.  The 12-week class is intended to prepare participants with little or no applicable experience for office occupations.  The course will utilize the latest business word processing and spreadsheet programs most often used by employers.  After completing Office Occupations, participants will be prepared to meet the minimum requirements of many entry-level clerical and related positions.

Note: To keep the class fully enrolled, Office Occupations will have an open enrollment policy.  Participants can be referred to the class as soon as a slot becomes available on the GROW system, which, for example, will occur when participants successfully complete their activity or enter employment.

KEY POINTS

·        Office Occupation training is available to participants after they complete REP, JSPC or Fastrak, unless otherwise recommended by the Employment Development Team (EDT)

·        Office Occupations will currently be available at Metro Special, Wilshire Special, Civic Center and East   Los Angeles/Humboldt.

·        Before participants start Office Occupations, they must attend an orientation that is scheduled every Thursday at Metro Special. Contact LACOE at (213) 744-3489 for dates and times.

·        Upon completion, participants receive a Regional Occupation Program (ROP) certificate of completion.

·        Participants who successfully find employment while attending Office Occupations may receive full credit if they do not finish before the expected completion date.

·        Class size is limited to 25 participants; Case Managers should call the provider to check the current number of available slots before making a referral.

·        Attendance is tracked on the GROW system.

CASE MANAGER DUTIES

·        Check with the Office Occupations provider to determine the next available orientation session.

·        Explain and have participant sign the ABP 1463.

·        Closely monitor attendance; a Progress Report, ABP 1469, will be sent every 30 days.

·        Issue work-related expenses, including transportation.  Participants needing business attire will be referred to the Clothing Boutique.

·        Review the Employment Needs Evaluation screens for any potential barriers to employment and make appropriate supportive services referrals, as needed.

·        Update the office Occupations component on the GROW system.
