The Department of Public Social Services has two sections which investigate fraud.

The Welfare Fraud Prevention & Investigations (WFP&I) Section investigates allegations of welfare fraud in the CalWORKS, Food Stamps, General Relief, Greater Avenues for Independence (GAIN); and Refugee Programs. WFP&I determines the amount of, and seeks restitution for, fraudulent cash overpayments and Food Stamps overissuance.

The Internal Affairs Unit investigates allegations of employee fraud within the Department.

The purpose of both units is to prevent fraud.
