Former Foster Care Children
As you leave Foster Care there are some things you need to know about your health care coverage. This program will provide full, no cost Medi-Cal for persons who were in foster care on their 18th birthday and who were released from foster care due to age. Coverage can continue until your 21st birthday.

You can obtain:

  • regular health check-ups
  • immunizations
  • health care when you are sick
  • medical treatment if you are injured
  • regular dental check-ups
  • needed dental care
  • vision tests
  • eyeglasses
  • hospitalization when necessary
  • health exam for a new job
  • mental health services

All without having to worry about how to pay the bill!

When your foster care status ends, the Department of Children and Family Services will send your Medical eligibility information to the Department of Public Social Services and your case will be assigned to an Eligibility Worker. You will receive a letter giving the name and telephone number of your eligibility Worker.

Under this program, you DO have to...

  • provide the Medi-Cal worker with your current address
  • reside in California in order to remain eligible
  • respond to the once-per-year contact from your Medi-Cal worker who will ask you if you still want Medi-Cal coverage.

You DO NOT have to...

  • go to a Medi-Cal office
  • fill out application forms
  • provide documents such as your birth certificate, Social Security card, bank statements or pay stubs

Important: If you are not eligible to this program because you left foster care before your 18th birthday, you may still qualify for Medi-Cal through the regular application process.
